2024 Finalist in the World of WearableArt, Wellington New Zealand
26 September – 13 October, 2024
With the protection of the past, this dress is a practical mantilla for the future.
This dress was created as a protection device for my close friend Margy. I restricted myself to two simple flat shapes that were repeated throughout the garment. I allowed these shapes to dictate the forms produced and the final outcome. The dress was not ‘designed’ but evolved from the possibilities of these shapes and forms, and was directed by the material’s natural limitations. The dress is constructed from plastic gutterguard which was embroidered with black garden tie. Gutterguard is an unusual weave in comparison to traditional textiles, and the diamond and star patterns produced are a reflection of this weave. Gutterguard is an outdoor material used for roof gutters and is usually used to keep unwanted debris out and to minimise maintenance. The dress took form over about 4-5 months in my first studio in West End, Brisbane. It was an enjoyable process of play, failure and persistence.
